What makes a cable more than just a cable? At first glance it's very hard to tell. However, upon closer inspection, you will realize how different a high quality cable is from a low quality cable. In this particular instance, I am reviewing the Studioflex cable, by Digiflex. Digiflex is a Canadian company based out of Dorval, Quebec. They make many instrument cables and they all carry a limited lifetime warranty. I had the pleasure of trying out the Studioflex cable. This cable is designed specifically for studio use (hence the name) and serves its purpose well. The Studioflex is solid and sounds terrific. But let's go through it piece by piece: The cable is braided, which feels awkward to hold, yet is excellent in terms of durability and sound. The cable is also royal blue, seperating it from the 20 black cables lining my studio floor. A nice touch! The cable heads are super solid. Digiflex uses Neutrik cable heads, which are well-respected for their solidity. The strength and durability of this cable is a re-occuring theme and the cable heads help to reinforce that trait. Overall, cables are being built a little more solid with every passing year, but this cable is really something else! |
However, it doesn't matter how strong a cable is if it lacks in sound. Luckily, this isn't the case with the Studioflex, as it is 95% shielded and you can hear a clear difference. This cable will not add any noise to your guitar, I can guarentee that. And by eleminating cable noise, that is just one less problem to be stressed about when recording! That being said, the one area that this cable does lack is in what is called, 'cable memory'. 'Cable memory' is how easily a cable retains its original shape. A good way to test this is to bundle up your cable and shake it; if it falls back into shape then it has good 'cable memory'. The Studioflex is a stiff cable and doesn't do quite as well as other cables in this regard. Still, let's be honest, I'd rather have durabililty and great sound quality than cable memory. And overall, this cable is still excellent and worth every penny. A studio full of Digiflex cables is a studio I want to record at! Be sure to visit the Digiflex website and check out all their other cables. |
